Predicting the Dallas Cowboys final roster in early training camp
By Randy Gurzi
How will the Dallas Cowboys roster look for Week 1 of the 2020 season?
Like the rest of the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys 2020 training camp is underway. They’re also facing a lot of uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing teams to adjust how they prepare for the season — and once that does start, there will surely be even more adjustments made.
While none of that can be predicted, we can look at the roster and try to predict who will be on the team when the season does begin. And this year will also be different in that regard since the NFL is allowing teams to carry two more players to their roster making the total 55 — of course, there are limitations on the final two spots since they have to be practice squad eligible, but teams will be able to move those players back and forth without exposing them to waivers.
Here we will dive right into the Cowboys roster and predict which 53 players will be there when the regular season kicks off and which two practice squad players are most likely to be in the mix for promotion to the active roster.
Dallas Cowboys roster: Quarterback (2)
This is probably the easiest positional group to predict on the roster. Dallas has their starting quarterback and for the first time in several years, they have one of the best backups in the game as well.
Dak Prescott
Dallas completely botched the contract negotiations with Dak Prescott, but that’s kind of become their thing. They did the same thing with DeMarcus Lawrence and were pretty bad in handling the Ezekiel Elliott holdout as well. Still, even with Prescott not locked up long-term, he comes in as the unquestioned starter in 2020.
He’s also fresh off his best season as a pro, which saw him fall just one-yard shy of the team record for passing yardage in a single season. Now armed with more weapons and a more quarterback-friendly coach, there’s no reason to think he won’t have similar success this season.
Andy Dalton
Former Cincinnati Bengals starting quarterback Andy Dalton was let go this offseason and Dallas gladly brought the former TCU star in to be their No. 2 quarterback. Dalton has 133 starts under his belt and is 70-61-2 in those games. He’s 0-4 in the playoffs with an atrocious 1-to-6 touchdown-to-interception ration in the postseason but what’s important is the fact that he can keep this team competitive should something happen to Dak.
