Packers training camp: 5 Players who will turn heads in Green Bay
3. AJ Dillon, RB
Lost in the fact that the Packers traded up to select a quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft — or at least not nearly as criticized — is the fact that they again ignored the blatant need at wide receiver in Round 2 by taking running back AJ Dillon. Not only was that a possible reach for the running back but it was also addressing a position that hardly had a need.
Last season, Aaron Jones was finally freed and showcased just how effective he can be. He led all NFL running back in touchdowns, rushing for 16 and totaling 19 overall. Meanwhile, Green Bay also had Jamaal Williams, one of the more effective and consistent backups in the league, sitting behind Jones. Put simply, the Pack didn’t need to add Dillon to the mix.
Even so, the rookie out of Boston College is a physical freak. At 6-0, 250 pounds, the running back still ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash, put up 23 reps in the bench press and posted incredible numbers in his jumps with a 41-inch vertical and 131-inch broad. For a player with his size, his athleticism is off the charts.
Furthermore, Dillon was also extremely productive throughout his college career, which is saying something considering he was the only consistent option on the BC offense. So while I question how much work he’ll take from Jones and Williams in the regular season, expect him to wow a bit in training camp considering the physical presence he brings to the field.
