Packers training camp: 5 Players who will turn heads in Green Bay
1. Jace Sternberger, TE
As a rookie third-rounder last year, tight end Jace Sternberger didn’t play a massive role for Green Bay’s offense. He played in only six regular-season games, never playing more than 14 offensive snaps in a given game. He did step up for 39 snaps over the team’s two playoff games where he recorded all of his receiving stats, catching all three of his targets for 15 yards and a touchdown.
Having said that, Sternberger entered the league out Texas A&M as a bit of a project. He needed to ready himself to an NFL route tree and to be at least passable as a blocker, something he wasn’t asked to do hardly ever in college. Thus, the first year in the league, particularly playing behind veterans Marcedes Lewis and Jimmy Graham.
All reports leading into the season, however, indicate that Sternberger’s role is about to increase in a major capacity. In fact, you could make the argument that the potential emergence of Sternberger in the passing offense could’ve been a contributing factor as to why the front office spurned addressing wide receiver this offseason.
In Packers training camp, expect Sternberger to start drawing rave reviews, at least once he can take the field after getting off the Injured Reserve/COVID-19 list. His size and athleticism at the size in addition to his route-running and hands could make him the MVP of camp in Green Bay.
