Five big things seen at Dallas Cowboys training camp day 1
After an incredibly long offseason, the Dallas Cowboys are finally back on the field as their training camp practices were officially underway on Friday. And after not seeing any OTAs or minicamps all offseason, there was a lot to look for in the first workout leading up to the 2020 NFL season.
It was also hard to find a whole lot of information early on during the day as reporters weren’t able to send out many photos or videos. Then suddenly, information starting pouring out quickly and there was a lot to take away from the practices and what was said by the coaching staff — mostly by way of head coach Mike McCarthy.
Here we will dive in and look at the five biggest takeaways from the Cowboys first day of camp, starting with a potential position change.
5. Chidobe Awuzie could be used at safety
The Cowboys lost their biggest star at cornerback this offseason as Byron Jones signed with the Miami Dolphins. While they didn’t truly replace him with any of their additions, they do have a lot of options now. In fact, there are so many options that the team could possibly consider moving Chidobe Awuzie from cornerback to safety.
This is an idea that has been tossed around some and while Awuzie spent most of the day playing on the boundaries, defensive coordinator Mike Nolan did praise his versatility — which includes him having experience at safety in college.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said that team wants flexibility in secondary. DC Mike Nolan expected to tap into CB Chidobe Awuzie's versatility; he has experience at both cornerback and safety.

What it will all come down to is how comfortable the Cowboys are in second-round pick and while it was only one practice, early reports suggest the rookie is already getting it done. Veteran safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix spoke to the media and he had high praise for Diggs, saying he has what it takes to go against the best in the game.
If that’s the case, the Cowboys might explore moving Awuzie to safety which would allow them to get all their best secondary players on the field at the same time.
