Dallas Cowboys: 3 Options to replace Gerald McCoy
By Randy Gurzi
2. Sink or swim with Hill
This is not the option fans want, but it’s out there nonetheless. Dallas was without a first-round pick in 2019 following their trade for Amari Cooper the prior season. Cooper was well worth the price but it was hard to watch the Boys sit back for the entirety of the first night of the draft. Then when they were on the clock, things got weird.
Dallas elected not to go after a safety — which was their biggest need — and instead took Trysten Hill from UCF. Hill was a talented player who more than once would wreck an offensive gameplay with his burst off the snap and sheer power.
However, he also had his football character questioned and spent the final season with UCF as a reserve. Even so, former defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli absolutely loved him. Well, at least in the draft he did because he clearly didn’t like him enough to put him on the field as a rookie.
As for the new staff in Big D, it didn’t seem as though they thought too highly of him either. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is installing a new scheme and Dallas went out and landed him Gerald McCoy, Dontari Poe, and Neville Gallimore. They also re-signed Antwaun Woods, which had Hill on the router bubble in just his second season.
Now with McCoy out, he has a huge opportunity in front of him. Clearly no player roots for another to be injured but this could be the opening Hill needs to save his spot with the Cowboys. The question is — can he take advantage?
