Dallas Cowboys: 3 Options to replace Gerald McCoy
By Randy Gurzi
1. Go with Tyrone Crawford
The best option for replacing Gerald McCoy is the one the team is most likely to go with. That would be moving Tyrone Crawford into the three-technique spot. Had this injury happened one week ago, doing so would have been rough but the aformentioned Everson Griffen signing actually opened the door for this move to happen.
Before Griffen was brought in, Crawford was expected to start at right defensive end with Aldon Smith serving as his primary back up. With Griffen in town, the talented Crawford was looking to return to his hybrid role that included him being able to substitute in as both an edge rusher as well as an interior defensive lineman on third downs.
Ever since joining the league back in 2012, that’s kind of been the M.O. for Crawford. He’s never really been able to stay at one spot as he’s bounced from inside to outside and from a three man to a four man line year after year. While he’s never cemented himself as one of the best in the league, it’s impossible to watch him play and not be impressed with his versatility and leadership.
Of course, Crawford has his own concerns as well as he’s coming back off double hip surgery after missing the majority of the 2019 season. Dallas will need to work him in slowly to ensure he stays healthy but there’s no doubt he’s the best option to replace McCoy.
The Dallas defensive line looked dominating just a couple or days ago and the loss of McCoy hurts that. But thankfully, the cupboard isn’t bare.
