Defense begins to rule at the end of Round 1 in the 2021 NFL Draft

Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. EDGE. Carlos Basham Jr.. Wake Forest. 25. player. 48

Shaq Barrett isn’t under a long-term deal just yet and Jason Pierre-Paul, though still thriving, is getting older. Carlos Basham Jr. not only has an elite nickname (Boogie) but he’s been a force at Wake Forest. His explosiveness and speed aren’t going to jump off the charts. But he’s technically sound and powerful, allowing him to arrive in the NFL and make an impact.

Paulson Adebo. 26. 123. Scouting Report. Stanford. player. Pick Analysis. CB

I’ve mocked Hamsah Nasirildeen to Dallas more times than I can count. With him off the board, though, the hole at corner must be addressed, assuming Trevon Diggs doesn’t thrive as a rookie. Adebo is not as perfect a prospect as thought after his 2018 season but the Stanford product is a clear NFL starter who could be in that role right away for the secondary-hungry Cowboys.

47. Pick Analysis. IDL. USC. 27. player. Scouting Report. Jay Tufele

Jay Tufele is the type of player that the Patriots tend to really get enamored with. He has great size at 6-3, 315 pounds and is an explosive athlete for a player that size. But what New England needs to get out of him is consistent plays from the first quarter through the fourth. They’re more than willing to take that chance in this mock draft at the end of Round 1.

Pick Analysis. IDL. 28. player. 55. Scouting Report. LSU. Tyler Shelvin

Losing Javon Hargrave in free agency this past offseason can’t be overlooked as he was a force in the middle for Pittsburgh. They look to replace him here with Tyler Shelvin. The LSU standout is a natural fit at the nose tackle spot of the Steelers’ 3-4 base front and he can be a versatile game-wrecker that continues to solidify a high-quality defense.
