The New York Giants took another step to improve the pass defense with Logan Ryan.
The Logan Ryan offseason odyssey finally came to an end this week after reports came out that the veteran will sign a one-year, $7.5 million deal with the New York Giants. Ryan was on the hunt for a new team after three years with the Tennessee Titans and initial reports suggested that he was looking for multi-year deal worth around $10 million annually.
Ryan clearly overestimated his own value as he settled for much less than that with just two weeks to go before the 2020 regular season kicks off for the Giants on Sept. 13. Regardless of what Ryan thinks he is worth versus what he will actually sign for, he immediately becomes a key figure for the Giants as they attempt to rebuild their disastrous defense.
The Giants were among the worst in the NFL in 2019 in just about every defensive category. They gave up the fifth-most passing yards, the seventh-most passing touchdowns, recorded just 10 interceptions, and gave up the third-most points in the league ahead of just the woeful Dolphins and Panthers.
New York was in the middle of the pack in rush defense but why would teams bother to run the ball when the pass defense put up such little resistance? A major overhaul was needed, and it began in free agency and continued into the draft.
