Amid injuries and losing his job in Arizona to Kenyan Drake eventually, David Johnson was not a startable running back in fantasy for the 2019 season. He finished the year as the RB37 as he had just 345 rushing yards and two touchdowns, though he did put up 36 receptions for 370 yards and four more scores.
The change of scenery is one big part of the equation for Johnson’s 2020 value, though. He’s been maligned a bit as part of the package sent to the Texans in exchange for DeAndre Hopkins because that trade was so bad for Houston. That, however, shouldn’t color your perception of what the Texans could get out of the running back this season.
With reports all indicating that Johnson is healthy now, it’s important to note that Carlos Hyde was a 1,000-yard rusher last year and finished as the RB23 in non-PPR scoring with the Texans. And that was with virtually no work in the passing game (10 receptions, 42 yards, 0 touchdowns). While Duke Johnson is still in the fold, David Johnson is going to be in the same role as the lead back but with more pass-catching upside and production.
Johnson is a bit of a gamble because, well, he just did not look good when on the field last season. Having said that, if going to a new team and possibly getting back to health rejuvenates him, then getting him to start Round 5 could end up being one of the steals of the draft.
