Las Vegas Raiders: 3 Reasons Derek Carr is facing his last chance
1. The supporting cast is excellent
Trey Lance could potentially be the next quarterback of the Las Vegas Raiders. Incidentally, the North Dakota State quarterback pipeline already has a less obvious connection to the Raiders and Carr, namely through Carson Wentz. It may seem a strange comparison but Wentz and Carr share their own similarities.
Both players have had ups and downs in their respective careers bu,t when the stars were aligned and the supporting casts were good, both quarterbacks looked like MVP-caliber players. They then both got hurt and missed their respective playoff games and chances at the award.
Carr very easily could have been MVP in 2016 considering the eventual winner, Matt Ryan, seemingly came out of nowhere — and who knows how far the Raiders go in the playoffs. Carr reaped the benefits of Latavius Murray in the backfield, Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper at wide receiver, and arguably the best offensive line in football. Carr got hurt, parts were moved and here we are.
Coming into 2020, the supporting cast is looking good for Carr and the Raiders. Second-year running back Josh Jacobs is miles better than Murray in his youth, the offensive line is still very good as well across the board.
When it comes to who Carr will throw to, Darren Waller broke out as a legitimate talent at tight end last year, with Hunter Renfrow also returning after improving over his rookie season. While Tyrell Williams is out for the season with an injury, the Raiders brought in young reinforcements with Henry Ruggs III, Nelson Agholor, Bryan Edwards and Lynn Bowden Jr. There are no excuses for Carr not to be productive.
It can’t be stressed enough that Derek Carr is a very good quarterback. It’s hard to name 12 quarterbacks you’d rather have but, at this particular point in his career with all of these factors considered, he may be wearing new colors in 2021 if his time in the silver and black doesn’t lead to success in 2020.
