NFL Predictions: Every team’s MVP for the 2020 season
Los Angeles Chargers: RB Austin Ekeler
Austin Ekeler came out of absolutely nowhere to become one of the most important players on the Los Angeles Chargers. An undrafted free agent in 2017, Ekeler’s role has grown every year and in 2019 he broke out with an incredible 92 catches for 993 yards and eight receiving touchdowns. He added 557 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns to finish ninth in the NFL in total yards from scrimmage with 1,550.
The Chargers are rolling into the season with veteran Tyrod Taylor as the starting quarterback but when they eventually hand the reins off to rookie Justin Herbert, he will have the luxury of one of the best receiving backs in the league lined up behind him.
Ekeler may not be the workhorse back that Herbert can turn and hand the ball to 20 times a game but if he needs to get into rhythm or hit a checkdown, there aren’t many better options than the fourth-year back.
LA is in a transition period as they move on from the Philip Rivers era after 15 years and enter the unfamiliar waters of a young QB. Weapons like Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry will make that a smoother transition but none more so than Austin Ekeler.
