3. Trevon Diggs, Cornerback
Another Dallas Cowboys rookie is going to be leaned on heavily in Week 1, and that’s Trevon Diggs. The second-round pick was a steal at No. 51 overall but will still have his hands full as he will be lining up opposite players such as Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods in his NFL debut.
On top of that, he’s going to have the added pressure of replacing a former Pro Bowl cornerback that happened to be very loved by the fans. Byron Jones had developed into a great cover corner and that led to him securing a massive contract from the Miami Dolphins in the offseason.
In order to replace him, the Cowboys went with a committee approach as they added free agent Daryl Worley, re-signed Anthony Brown, and also drafted Diggs and Reggie Robinson in the fourth. Robinson has since been moved to safety but his drafting was just more proof that the team was going to leave no stone unturned as they looked for their next No. 1 cornerback.
No matter how any of the others do, Diggs is the player Dallas wants in that No. 1 role. He’s tall, physical, and has great hands — especially considering he’s a converted receiver. And as fate would have it, he’s facing a pass-happy offense in his NFL debut. That means his performance in Week 1 is going to be vital to the outcome of the game.
