Mitchell Trubisky started off slow but hit his stride to complete a Chicago Bears comeback

Since being drafted ahead of Deshaun Watson and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes in 2017, Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has faced many struggles. With Watson taking the league by storm and Mahomes now having hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, Trubisky has largely been in the news for inconsistency and inability to win football games.

Unsurprisingly, he had a slow start in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, going 4-of-15 in the first quarter as the Bears were locked in a 3-3 affair with their divisional rivals. Trubisky continued to play pedestrian football as the Bears fell behind 23-6 heading into the final quarter of the game, when victory seemed all but out of reach.

Then, suddenly, Trubisky flipped the switch, going for three touchdown passes all in one quarter as Chicago overcame the 17-point deficit to escape the Motor city with a 27-23 victory, leaving Lions fans, both virtual and cutout, in disbelief.

The Bears saw glimpses of what they drafted Mitchell Trubisky to be.

Early in the fourth quarter, Trubisky completed a one-yard touchdown pass to newly signed tight end Jimmy Graham to cut the deficit to 23-13. Following a Lions punt, Trubisky went right back down the field and fired a strike to former seventh-round draft pick Javon Wims that put the game at 23-20.

After Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was intercepted on the next series by Kyle Fuller, Trubisky lofted a rainbow to wide receiver Anthony Miller for the go-ahead score that put Chicago up, 27-23. The Lions would march down the field and came close to a victory, only for it fall through the hands of rookie running back  D’Andre Swift.

Trubisky would finish the game 20-of-36 with 242 yards passing and three touchdowns while rushing three times for 26 yards.

This is not new to Detroit fans who watched their team blow a lead in the season-opener a year before to Kyler Murray and the Cardinals, while escaping with a tie. On the Bears perspective, this is more like the case of “Good Rex and Bad Rex”, a tribute to former first-round quarterback Rex Grossman, the last Bears quarterback to take the team to the Super Bowl.

The Bears are 1-0 and now face the Giants in Week 2. If Trubisky plays like he did in the fourth quarter, the Bears might not have to worry about a late-game struggle.
