Dallas Cowboys: Studs and duds from Week 1 clunker vs. Rams
By Randy Gurzi
Stud: Trevon Diggs, Cornerback
Another defensive back makes the list as Trevon Diggs really had a solid outing for the Dallas Cowboys. The No. 51 overall pick in the draft, Diggs earned a starting job and he made some solid plays.
He recorded a clutch stop on a third-and-short run that gave the offense a chance at the comeback late and almost had an interception as well on a batted ball. He did give up a couple of deep passes but in each situation, he was in great position and did all he could — but just fell victim to a great play by the opponent.
Overall, it was a solid first day for the rookie and something for him to grow from. He should end up being a real stud for this team the more comfortable he gets.
Dud: Darian Thompson, Safety
As good as Diggs was, the rest of the secondary really struggled. Anthony Brown seemed to always be two yards away from his guy and the safety play was non-existent. Darian Thompson, who beat out Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, got the start at strong safety and while he had 10 tackles, he also had far too many whiffs that hurt the Cowboys.
His play on Sunday felt an awful lot like what we saw from Jeff Heath for years. He was always in the right spot but just never finished.
