New England Patriots: 3 Biggest surprises from win in Week 1
2. New England has a new dual-threat offense
When the Patriots signed Cam Newton this offseason to take over the offense under center for the legendary Tom Brady, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent this offseason, the most intriguing part about Newton was his ability to offer his new team with a dual-threat offense for basically the first time in forever.
When it comes to Newton, many anticipated that he would help improve New England’s offense and the personnel on that side of the ball with his talents and abilities, but in the season-opener that was on full display right away.
With Newton’s abilities to hurt opposing defenses both on the ground and through the air, you never really know what kind of offense you’re going to see out of the Patriots on any given week. In the Week 1 win, the running game out-weighed the rushing attack. But that could change from week to week.
Through the air, Newton finished the game with 15 completions and a total of 155 passing yards. On the ground, he led the New England offense in the rushing attack, tallying 15 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
The Patriots both threw the ball and ran the ball against Miami, showcasing a new dual-threat offense that is somewhat of a new look that Patriots fans haven’t been used to seeing out it their team’s offense in the past.
