NFL Week 1 winners and losers: Aaron Rodgers, Colts and Cam Newton
By Zach Cohen
NFL Week 1 Winner: Mitchell Trubisky truthers
You could practically hear Nick Foles chants echoing through the empty Ford Field in Detroit. That is until Mitchell Trubisky orchestrated 21 unanswered points to tame the Lions. He didn’t look like the next face of the NFL, but Trubisky did well enough to stake his claim as the Bears’ starting quarterback — for now.
NFL Week 1 Loser: Jacksonville’s ‘Tank for Trevor’ campaign
Just like that, the Jaguars are first place in the AFC South. And it didn’t seem like a fluke, either. Gardner Minshew looked like a legit starting quarterback with a bounty of offensive weapons. The defense was headlined by superb play from first-round pick CJ Henderson, who added his name to Philip Rivers’ growing list of players to intercept him.
I won’t pretend that Jacksonville is suddenly a playoff contender or anything, but their win throws a wrench into the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes.
NFL Week 1 Winner: Los Angeles Chargers
This has more to do with their uniforms and less to do with their lucky win at Cincinnati. The light blue and yellow looked electric — pun intended — in Paul Brown Stadium. As good as their previous uniforms were, the Chargers will continue to be among the NFL’s best-looking teams with these hot threads.
NFL Week 1 Loser: Social Distancing
It was great to see real football for once, but man, there wasn’t much social distancing on the gridiron today! (If every commentator can make this joke on Sunday, why can’t I?)
NFL Week 1 Winner: Scorigami
Basically, this automated Twitter account keeps track of games that finish in a unique score. It has earned a massive, diehard fanbase, which went reasonably nuts today when the Packers defeated the Vikings, 43-34. That was the first time the score has ever been recorded in NFL history. The account is a great follow if you’re into cool statistics like these.
NFL Week 1 Loser: Overreactions
It happens every Week 1. People see one game or one play and immediately jump to conclusions.
Let’s slow the “Tom Brady is overrated” talk, though he didn’t look like a future Hall of Famer in Tampa Bay’s loss to New Orleans. One week does not define players, nor does it define teams.
