Chicago Bears X-factor No. 1: Mitchell Trubisky, Quarterback

Okay, so Mitchell Trubisky‘s fourth quarter was something to behold. Aside from the fumble that was almost catastrophic, he did everything he needed to do to pull out the win. Kudos to him for that.

However, there were three other quarters where it seemed like he did everything he could to lose the game. Despite hearing all the gushing reviews about how Trubisky looked like a new player, what we saw was a repeat of the same Trubisky errors he’s made throughout his career. He had some bad footwork, had accuracy problems, and made bad decisions.

Trubisky had happy feet while looking down the field. He anticipated a big rush before it actually happened. At times he panicked. There were times when he had wide-open receivers underneath but he was looking downfield and never spotted the open receivers. He kept trying to needle passes into small windows when he had open receivers or he had wide running lanes to run through.

He won’t last long as the starter if he continues to play like that. The fourth quarter might have changed the course of his career. If his struggles continued for the rest of the game, head coach Matt Nagy would need to seriously look at bringing in Nick Foles. After getting benched two games into the season, that would probably be the end of his career in Chicago.

Yes, it may seem a bit hyperbolic, but Trubisky has a short leash on him and needs to show all those improvements the Bears told us about. If he shows the same things that frustrated Nagy and the fans, there’s no other choice but to bench him. There are only a number of fourth-quarter miracles he can generate to help bail him out.
