Is Sam Darnold on pace to be replaced by the Jets in 2021?
Could Sam Darnold’s time with the New York Jets be coming to a close?
The 2017 NFL Draft was headlined by the high selections of quarterbacks, such as Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold, and the late rounders like Lamar Jackson. In addition, there was Josh Allen and Josh Rosen.
Fast forward to 2020 and four of those quarterbacks remain on their drafted team. The other was a top 10 selection and is now on the Buccaneers practice squad. If this was Jeopardy! and you said, “Who is Josh Rosen?”, you would have hit the big Daily Double.
However, given the current state of the New York Jets and what lies ahead in the 2021 NFL Draft, Darnold could very well join the list if the Jets decide to clean house and start over for the umpteenth time. In other words, the team might get rid of their quarterback.
Would the New York Jets dump a highly drafted quarterback in Sam Darnold?
In an ESPN article by Rich Cimini, there lies a possibility that the Jets would prefer to tank the season in hopes of landing Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL Draft. So are the Jets about to do what Arizona did and dump their once thought-to-be franchise quarterback?
Look at the facts, Rosen’s career in Arizona consisted of a 3-10 record with 2,278 yards and 11 touchdowns with 14 interceptions before being traded to Miami, where he registered an 0-3 record and is now on the practice squad in Tampa.
Darnold’s record in Gang Green is 11-22 with 6,104 yards passing along with 37 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. After what Allen and his team in Buffalo did to the Jets in Week 1, the outlook seems to be really bleak.
Let’s admit it, the Jets organization has struggled significantly at the quarterback position. Since Broadway Joe left, the Jets had Vinny Testaverde take them to the AFC title game and lose to John Elway, along with Mark Sanchez going to back to back title games before becoming a meme with the Butt Fumble.
Trevor Lawrence may be the option, and the Jets are the team that desperately needs the quarterback position fixed, but will they pull the Rosen move and try to Tank for Trevor? Nothing is set in stone with the Jets…except for a chaotic atmosphere.
