DraftKings NFL Values for Week 2: Tight Ends
Zach Ertz (PHI vs. LAR, $5,600) is in the midst of heated contract negotiations with the Philadelphia Eagles, so he enters Week 2 with a chip on his shoulders. After a Week 1 breakout, Dallas Goedert will draw defensive attention away from Carson Wentz’s true security blanket, allowing Ertz more room to roam in the middle of the field.
While Quintez Cephus saw a team-high ten targets, T.J. Hockenson (DET at GB, $5,200) efficiently caught all five targets for 52 yards and a touchdown in a game script that called for minimal fourth-quarter usage. In Week 2, Lambeau field provides the stage for the kind of Stafford-to-Hockenson connection that fantasy football freaks have been waiting a full calendar year for.
Hayden Hurst (ATL at DAL, $4,600) was a forgotten man in the game script last week, due in part to the presence of Jamal Adams in the opposing defensive backfield. Conversely, the Dallas Cowboys allowed more tight end receptions (104) than any team in football last year and was one of only three that ceded 1,000 yards to the position.
Hurst will enjoy much more room to work this week as an understated cog in an offense that has heavily relied on the tight end in recent years. Factor in a less-than-100-percent Julio Jones, and it’s not hard to imagine a 100 yard game from the 2018 Round 1 draft pick from the Baltimore Ravens.
Jonnu Smith (TEN vs. JAX, $4,200) is going to be boom-or-bust all year long, but he showed out last week (4-36-1 on seven targets). With AJ Brown sitting this one out, are high that Smith will be heavily relied-upon once again.
Our two favorite bargain-basement tight end options are Logan Thomas (WAS at ARI, $3,600) and Chris Herndon (NYJ vs. SF, $3,300). Both should benefit from game scripts that will favor them, but not their teams.
Thomas proved last week that the preseason drumbeat about him becoming a primary option was not a smokescreen. Herndon, meanwhile, has the talent to break out any given week, and should see more targets than usual; New York Jets wide receivers will have their hands full as they face off against a set of superior defensive backs.
