Cam Newton exposed the Seahawks, even in Patriots loss
Even in defeat, Patriots quarterback Cam Newton brought quite a bit to light.
Amidst Jamal Adams and the rest of the Seattle Seahawks defense acting like they won the Super Bowl, New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton did something that showed his resilience in a 35-30 loss on Sunday Night Football in NFL Week 2.
Even while suffering the loss though, Seattle got exposed by Newton and the Patriots. It came down to one goal-line stand reminiscent of Super Bowl XLIX and 2016. New England has the Super Bowl but Seattle now has the regular-season moments.
Newton’s stats for the night? 347 yards through the air and one touchdown to go along with two rushing touchdowns. A dual-threat, no doubt, and he made several plays that had Seahawks players going in the wrong direction. Not to mention the ability to consistently escape pressure.
After last week in a win over the Dolphins, Newton showed that teams made a mistake in not signing him. Seattle, meanwhile, had come off a dominant performance against Atlanta and was being perceived as a legit contender in the NFC.
Then came Sunday night at home when Seattle allowed 30 points and nearly lost the game on the final play. That particular bit not only showed the resilience of Newton but assured the Patriots fanbase that they made the right decision in acquiring him to replace Tom Brady.
Cam Newton raised big questions about the Seahawks defense, viability
Newton also exposed the Seattle defensive line, which historically has been formidable but looked like a shell of itself on Sunday night. The only sack they had was from Adams, a safety. No pressure and letting Newton run play after play only to be stymied by dropped passes and incompletions? That says a lot.
Moreover, if you’re Seattle, how does Julian Edelman get 179 yards on eight catches? That’s Cam Newton, once again, picking apart a defense that was once widely viewed as one of the top units in the league.
Plus Russell Wilson was once again put under so much pressure that every one of his four touchdown passes on the night was essential as Newton was playing with an aggressive mindset that multiple franchises glanced over when they passed on him in free agency.
Adams and his defensive teammates can enjoy this win and rightfully so. The defense stepped up on the final play of the game and the Seahawks are now 2-0. But one thing remains clear about tonight’s game: Cam Newton is back and he left Seattle’s defense with plenty of questions that need to be answered.
