An overtime loss masked a strong message from the Los Angeles Chargers.

It’s hard to imagine that the Los Angeles Chargers nearly pulled off a stunning upset against the defending Super Bowl champions. What’s even more remarkable is that they nearly pulled it off with a rookie quarterback, Justin Herbert, who was told he would start just minutes before kickoff.

With Tyrod Taylor out, Herbert threw for over 300 yards and nearly handed the Kansas City Chiefs their first defeat since they fell to Tennessee last season. Though Los Angeles walked away in defeat, they know that their draft choice looks like a very good decision.

But they also sent a message to the defending champions and the NFL: The Chiefs aren’t invincible.

The Chargers are proof that the champs are gettable any given week.

Heading into this season, especially after the draft, the perception by many in the national media, as well as NFL fans, was that Kansas City was a stacked team and was bound to repeat without breaking a sweat.

The Chargers, as with every other NFL team, liked their own chances. And they weren’t ready to just concede the Lombardi Trophy to their division rivals for the second-straight year. They showed as much in Week. Not to mention, a rookie quarterback in Herbert, who made his first start unexpectedly, gave Steve Spagnuolo’s defense a scare and a surprise all in one game.

Could it be just one game? Yes, it’s possible. But no team is perfect. The 1972 Dolphins may have had a perfect record but they were far from a perfect team. The Chiefs are in the same boat.

The Ravens are the next opponent and it will be on Monday Night Football. On paper, they present an even bigger challenge than the Chargers did, which could send the message LA started penning even louder to the rest of the league and fans.

As for Los Angeles, there aren’t too many good feelings after a loss. But in this case, a message was sent. No one is invincible, no matter what people say. And it doesn’t hurt to have a rookie quarterback already showing the things that Herbert did on Sunday.
