Green Bay Packers: 5 Early signs they’re Super Bowl contenders
By Joe Kipp
The Green Bay Packers appear to be one of the NFL’s elite teams in 2020.
It’s hard to improve on a 13-3 season from a year ago, but so far in the 2020 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers are on a similar path. The Packers have won each of their first two games this season, both coming on blowout fashion. Is it too early to tell if Green Bay is a serious Super Bowl contender?
For starters, two games is an extremely small sample size and everything we’ve seen so far should be taken with a grain of salt. But that’s not to say the Packers haven’t been one of the NFL’s elite teams this season, especially on offense.
The Packers are only the second team in NFL history to record at least 1,000 yards of offense and score 85 or more points in the first two weeks (the other team being the 1991 Buffalo Bills). Obviously, there’s some work to do on the defensive side of the ball, but if Green Bay can just outscore every opponent each week, it may not matter.
Of course, it may be unrealistic to expect the Packers to score 40 points every week. After all, the Packers only score 40 or more points once last season (Week 7 against the Raiders). Something is different this season, even though not much has changed.
The offense is clicking with Aaron Rodgers playing at an extremely high level. Now in Year 2 of coach Matt LaFleur’s playbook, Rodgers is comfortable commanding the offense and it’s showing. Not to mention Green Bay’s receivers are stepping up in a big way.
There’s still 14 games left in the regular season, but early indications are the Packers could be legitimate Super Bowl contenders in 2020. Here are the five biggest reasons why.
