Chicago Bears force another Falcons collapse to sit at an imperfect 3-0
The Chicago Bears caused the second straight collapse by the Atlanta Falcons.
The Chicago Bears trailed by 16 heading into the fourth quarter and had already benched quarterback Mitchell Trubisky in favor of backup Nick Foles. The Atlanta Falcons, meanwhile, were leading 26-10 even with their star wide receiver, Julio Jones, out with an injury.
For the second straight week, however, the Falcons failed to protect their fourth-quarter lead as the former Super Bowl MVP tossed three touchdowns in the final 15 minutes of play to erase the deficit and improve the Bears to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2013.
The win does feel nice for the Bears, yet underneath the mask of victory comes a hard to accept fact of reality: The Chicago Bears are more lucky than good.
The Chicago Bears 3-0 record still leaves a lot to be desired.
Make no mistake about it, winning is good in the NFL and certainly helps in the standings. Yet it’s worth noting that the Bears just defeated a team whose entire history and most notably recent history has been about choking in the biggest moment.
While Allen Robinson had a field day with 10 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown, Anthony Miller grabbed the game-winning touchdown and Tashaun Gipson sealing the game with an interception, it’s also worth noting that lost in the celebration was the disaster in the 1st half.
The Bears offense could not get themselves on track and Trubisky, aside from his big scamper for a first-and-goal, was mostly lethargic and uninspiring.
The defense doesn’t get to escape the game either. Though they dominated in the final few minutes, the unit played most of the first half like a Marc Trestman team defense, a group that Bears fans most certainly want to forget about.
Trubisky was benched, Foles came in and delivered a comeback and the Bears are now 3-0. An unbeaten record, sure, but several key flaws still remain at the forefront.
