New Orleans Saints: Studs and duds from Week 3 vs. Packers
Stud: QB Drew Brees
No player in NFL history has put thrown for more yards and more touchdown passes than the 2001 second-round pick of the then-San Diego Chargers. And Drew Brees had a solid evening and once again dealt with not having 2019 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Michael Thomas at his disposal.
The resourceful quarterback made good use of running back Alvin Kamara, who he threw at 14 times and connected for 13 grabs for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He also found Emmanuel Sanders four times for 56 yards and a score.
Brees finished hitting on 29 of his 36 throws for 288 yards and three scores without an interception. He was sacked twice and fumbled once but was turnover-free.
Dud: Pass Rush
Perhaps the credit should go to the Green Bay Packers’ offensive line. Heading into Sunday night’s tilt with the New Orleans Saints, Aaron Rodgers had been sacked only once. Dennis Allen’s defensive unit came into the contest with six quarterback traps, including a pair by fourth-year pro Trey Hendrickson.
In this game, he got one of the only three hits on Rodgers in the 37-30 shutout. The Saints came up with only one sack on the evening and that was on a blitz by linebacker Demario Davis. Star defensive end Cameron Jordan finished with four tackles but the Saints’ front did not get a lot of heat on Rodgers, who burned the New Orleans’ secondary numerous times.
