Chicago Bears: Benching Mitchell Trubisky was inevitable

It was only a matter of time before the Chicago Bears pulled the plug on Mitchell Trubisky.

Among the euphoria and celebration of another fourth-quarter comeback for the Chicago Bears was the realization of what had just happened to Mitchell Trubisky.

The former No. 2 overall pick was benched in favor of veteran backup quarterback and former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. The newcomer’s three touchdowns in the last 15 minutes doomed the Atlanta Falcons to their second straight collapse and improve the Bears to 3-0, one of seven teams currently remaining with the same record.

Following the game, head coach Matt Nagy did not immediately comment on the quarterback situation until Monday when he announced that Foles would be the starting quarterback moving forward into their next game against the Indianapolis Colts on the road.

While Foles is now the man with the keys to the car, Trubisky will be relegated to second-string duty and likely could be on his way out of Chicago after this season.

It wasn’t all Mitchell Trubisky’s fault he failed with the Chicago Bears.

Though a 2-0 start is enough to keep most teams from switching their quarterbacks, the Chicago Bears are one of those teams that could not refrain from doing such a task. Despite a fourth-quarter comeback against the Lions, Trubisky, albeit playing well in the final minutes, was largely ineffective in the first three quarters.

The following week against a depleted Giants team, Trubisky was productive in the first half and disastrous in the second half before the defense rescued the team and held on for the win. In the first half against Atlanta, outside of a very impressive scamper for 45 yards, Trubisky’s control of the offense left a lot to be desired.

With Foles in the mix, the offense seemed to progress at a higher rate and it’s only fair that Foles gets the chance to prove his worth. If it doesn’t work out after that, the Bears will likely have to go into the draft and target a new franchise quarterback, though that could happen with a new regime.

Mitchell Trubisky’s time in Chicago came to an end, but in reality, it wasn’t all his fault. It’s time for Nick Foles to take over and show what he’s capable of.
