Chicago Bears: 3 Bold predictions for Week 4 vs. Colts
2. The offensive line plays well
With the craziness of the season so far, the offensive line’s play has been kept quiet. Last season was a disaster. The season was full of bad play and key injuries. This season, however, things are different.
The holes for the running backs, David Montgomery in particular, are pretty big. You saw how well they blocked for Montgomery on that final drive in Week 2 against the New York Giants. He had huge holes to run through. Montgomery had 45 of the 59 yards the Bears had on that drive. Ultimately, Cairo Santos missed a field goal, but the offense was able to shave 5:41 off the clock. The defense needed every one of those seconds off the clock to avoid having the Giants get a game-winning touchdown.
Some may point to the fact that Trubisky has been sacked seven times. If you look at each sack, though, you’ll see that at least four of them were on Trubisky. He had open receivers close by on three of them, but decided to try for the big play. On another, he took off but slid down behind the line of scrimmage.
With Foles leading the offense, he’ll be able to get rid of the ball. He won’t take sacks. That could be to his detriment, however. He’ll go through all his progressions and despite making the throw, he’ll take a big hit, sometimes getting injured in the process.
The line will open holes for Montgomery and will give Foles enough time to get passes off. In terms of time given to the quarterback, sacks, and success in the running game, the Bears’ line ranks seventh according to Football Outsiders. This line is far and away better than it was last season.
