Can Nick Foles thrive now that he’s the Bears starter?
Will Nick Foles be able to bring the magic from Philly to the Bears?
The NFL career of Chicago Bears quarterback Nick Foles has been a tale of having both the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Since being drafted in 2012 out of Arizona, Foles has had two chapters in his career: his time with the Philadelphia Eagles and time with other franchises not located in the city that was home to William Penn.
As a member of the Eagles, his stats are quite impressive with 8,703 passing yards and 58 touchdowns to 23 interceptions. In addition, he holds an award that no Eagle has ever had bestowed upon them: Super Bowl MVP.
A 41-33 victory over Tom Brady and the Patriots in Super Bowl LII — after taking over the job following a Carson Wentz injury — combined with a famous “Philly Special” catapulted Foles into legend status with Philadelphia.
When not wearing a green uniform, however, his stats have left fans with green faces. Foles has accrued just 16 touchdowns and 13 interceptions with four different teams. This also includes the three touchdowns and one interception he registered in the comeback win for Chicago against Atlanta this past week when he took over in the second half.
Despite the lackluster performances outside of his Super Bowl home, a majority of it can be contributed to below-average offensive talent. As the Bears progress further into the season with high hopes, they need Foles to do something he hasn’t done yet in his career to continue after a 3-0 start: succeed with a team that’s not the Eagles.
Does Nick Foles find his first real success outside of Philadelphia?
With the way he performed under pressure with the Chicago Bears this past week, it’s fair to say he has a real shot to succeed in the Windy City. In his favor is a head coach in Matt Nagy, who like Doug Pederson, is a chip off the Andy Reid coaching tree that has produced several successful head coaches in the NFL.
Plus, the offensive personnel compared to LA or Jacksonville is a step up. With weapons at his disposal, Foles has shown the ability to deliver. Don’t forget the defense too; after all, Chicago is built on this side of the ball. With players looking to prove that their 3-0 start isn’t a misconception, expect the Bears to give Foles some assistance.
Should we expect Foles to deliver Chicago a Super Bowl this season? Not exactly. But if he proves to be a leader for the Windy City, he will end up becoming as famous as deep-dish pizza. After all, he is replacing Mitchell Trubisky, which means there’s no place to go but up.
