NFL Power Rankings, Week 5: Cowboys free-falling, Bills stay perfect
By Randy Gurzi
The 1-2 start was frustrating but the New Orleans Saints were able to shake that off and score a victory on the road against the struggling Detroit Lions. Drew Brees was his normal calm and efficient self, throwing for 246 yards with two touchdowns and a pick on 19-of-25 passing. He’s also finally showing a great rapport with Emmanuel Sanders, who was off to a slow start after being signed in the offseason.
Sanders hauled in six of nine targets for 93 yards as he continues to help the Saints get through these few weeks without Michael Thomas who is out with a high ankle sprain. Also stepping up has been Tre’Quan Smith who had both touchdowns on the day along with 54 total yards receiving.
On the ground, Latavius Murray went for 64 yards and two touchdowns but Alvin Kamara was the top rusher with 83 yards and a score. They needed all of that as the Lions continued to fight hard and keep it close, but in the end, New Orleans was a bit too much for them as they won it 35-29.
Defensively, they did just enough as they did give up the three touchdowns to Matt Stafford but sacked him three times and forced one pick. This isn’t the first time the Saints have started slow and they’re no strangers to turning it on in October and beyond. Which looks to be exactly what they’re about to do.
