NFL Power Rankings, Week 5: Cowboys free-falling, Bills stay perfect
By Randy Gurzi
Well, they finally got a win, but is it really one to brag about? The Denver Broncos were in New Jersey this week to play the struggling New York Jets on Thursday Night Football. For Denver, they were down to their third quarterback as Brett Rypien was getting the start in the place of the benched Jeff Driskel — who was taking over for the injured Drew Lock.
Rypien had his share of issues in this game, finishing with three picks, but he also had some decent moments. He finished with 242 yards through the air on 19-of-31 passing with a touchdown to Tim Patrick and one to Jerry Jeudy. Of course, that one from Jeudy was mostly a miraculous play by the rookie receiver who ripped a contested pass away from the New York defender and then walked backward into the end zone.
The star of this game was Melvin Gordon, who had his best game as a member of the Broncos. Knowing he was going to be targeted by the defense — the Jets really wanted to slow down the run and force Rypien to beat them — Gordon ripped off 107 yards and two touchdowns.
Denver now has a long week as they prepare to face the New England Patriots in Week 5, which could be an interesting game, especially if Cam Newton isn’t able to come back.
