Chicago Bears need coaching and front office overhaul, Matt Nagy and all
Matt Nagy, Ryan Pace and the Chicago Bears decision-makers need to go.
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy has all the right characteristics of what an NFL head coach should look and sound like. He also comes from the Andy Reid coaching tree, which has been known to produce multiple head coaches.
In this case, this fruit wasn’t ready for picking and, as such, it’s better to rid yourself of the fruit before it can affect your health. That’s right, Nagy must be gone at the end of this season, as should the man who hired him in the first place: general manager Ryan Pace.
Both men made several mistakes, none more glaring than Pace’s mistake on choosing Mitchell Trubisky over Patrick Mahomes, a player who, according to Alyssa Barbieri of Bears Wire, was told that he was their top draft choice. No doubt he took the rejection personally and the Super Bowl MVP award shows it.
The Bears flubbed on Trubisky and Nagy’s personal choice in Nick Foles did little to validate his claim in a loss to the Colts on Sunday. The offense is once again in the bottom of the league while the defense, a unit that should not be blamed, is finding themselves gassed by the end of the game due to the inefficiencies on the other side of the ball.
Nagy and Pace must go but Chicago Bears ownership is at fault
There are two sides to a feud. And the feud is Bears fans fighting over a serving a deep dish pizza as to who really is responsible. But should the Bears only let the coach and general manager go and keep the ownership intact, the mediocrity will be as consistent as the cold weather.
The McCaskeys have continued to prove that they have yet to evolve from the early years, but if you had to choose a certain individual, you have to look primarily at Ted Phillips, the team’s president.
Since he’s been on the job, the team has significantly regressed. 2006 seems so far away and even that season seems more or less like a fluke. Year after year, the acceptance of mediocrity by ownership has been so palpable that fans have become accustomed to such reality, a reality that the late great George Halas himself would be flipping out on.
The Bears have an opportunity to change the culture in the upcoming draft this year, but do not think for one second that the Bears will land Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields. Absolutely not. They may land a player like Kyle Trask, a player from the school that produced Rex Grossman. Yikes.
In other words, the Bears just can’t win. The way to fix this team is simple. Remove Nagy and Pace from the equation. Start with a general manager and coach who are on the same page. Additionally, they cannot be swayed by the owners’ preferences. The best teams have owners who stay out of the way and enjoy the success from a distance.
The Bears ownership can’t do such things and instead meddle in the business, expecting to win but only to fail. It’s a sad reality that Bears fans endure and unfortunately continue to support. They deserve better, but like the weather, it’s only getting worse.
