NFL Coach of the Year: Sean McDermott, Buffalo Bills

Four weeks of games have left us with six teams who remain unbeaten to this point. And it’s worth noting that two of those teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans, were supposed to play in Week 4 before their matchup was postponed due to COVID-19. Subsequently, one of them would’ve lost and left us with five.

Looking at that, however, you almost feel obligated to choose the Coach of the Year from the group of head coaches who are the helm of an undefeated team. And while Pete Carroll finally opening up the Seahawks offense has been great to watch, the jump that the Buffalo Bills have made this season gives Sean McDermott the early edge in this race.

Buffalo made the playoffs last season as a 10-6 club and McDermott, with the aid of general manager Brandon Beane and a great staff, has been building something impressive with the Bills. But even that couldn’t have prepared us for the Bills rolling out the way they have in 2020, namely with quarterback Josh Allen making a monster leap and this offense looking unstoppable.

For the past couple of years, the M.O. for Buffalo has been let defense win games and hope Allen does enough and limits his mistakes. That’s been turned on its head, though, as Allen is carrying this team to wins, which is a credit to how McDermott has built and developed his roster. Because of that, he deserves top honors for his position at this point in the season.
