A winning streak that dated back to last season has now ended for the Kansas City Chiefs thanks to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The trajectories of the 2020 season for both the Las Vegas Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs have been extremely different.

Both teams entered Week 5 knowing that a divisional game would be tough regardless of the record. The Raiders were 2-2 and were coming off a loss to New England Patriots. The Chiefs meanwhile, were 4-0 and riding a 13 game winning streak dating back to last season. The Chiefs had not lost since the Tennessee Titans beat them 35-32 last November.

Week 5 however proved to the be the Raiders’ day as Las Vegas sped their way through the defending champions 40-32 to improve to 3-2 on the season while Kansas City is knocked from the unbeaten club.

The Chargers nearly ended the streak themselves before Harrison Butker scraped the game back for KC with late field goals. The Raiders meanwhile, didn’t put themselves in a position to have it be like that. Plus, they did something that not many teams could do, they made Patrick Mahomes look human.

In the NFL, there are so many great teams, but nobody is perfect.

The Las Vegas Raiders have been criticized constantly since head coach Jon Gruden took over and traded away star pass-rusher Khalil Mack. They then had the Antonio Brown saga that ultimately backfired and their roster wasn’t what people expected to be in order to compete in the division.

But in the draft, they added a speedster in Henry Ruggs, a player that would have impressed the late Al Davis. With two catches for 118 yards and a touchdown, to say Ruggs was explosive would be an understatement. Josh Jacobs, the player whom they got with the Mack trade, is proving to be one of the league’s best runners. Jacobs had 77 yards and two touchdowns.

The biggest surprise would have to be QB Derek Carr outplaying Mahomes. Carr went 22/31 for  347 yards and three touchdowns and an interception while Mahomes went 22/43 for 340 and
two touchdowns with an interception. Though Travis Kelce had eight catches for 108 yards and a touchdown, it wasn’t enough.

The Raiders on the other hand, had many players step up and make contributions to put up 40 points, something that has not been done on the Chiefs since October 14, 2018, a 43-40 loss to the eventual champion Patriots.

Surely, Raider nation will be celebratory after this win, and why wouldn’t they? They just beat the defending champions on the road. Somewhere, Davis is saying his trademark “Just Win Baby”, and that’s exactly what the Las Vegas Raiders did.
