Following Dan Quinn’s departure, Raheem Morris will take over as interim HC for the Atlanta Falcons.

The Atlanta Falcons announced Monday that defensive coordinator Raheem Morris will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2020 NFL Season.

This announcement comes after the Falcons reported last night that they would be parting ways with former head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff. In addition, executive Rich McKay will oversee football operations until further notice.

Morris takes over a team that is both 0-5 and has blown two leads of 20+ points this season. In addition, Morris will also be responsible for helping the defense and offense find a rhythm that has been lacking this season.

This isn’t the first time, however, that Morris has held a head coaching gig in the NFL. In fact, Morris was a coach in the same division, the NFC South, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Raheem Morris has enough experience to be a head coach in the NFL.

Morris has a Super Bowl ring from Tampa Bay’s 2002 championship team. In December 2008, Morris took over as defensive coordinator after the departure of Monte Kiffin. Morris then became the head coach in 2009 following the firing of Jon Gruden.

In his second season, the Buccaneers finished 10-6, barely missing the playoffs. But Morris will always be remembered for his comments on a gaffe from defensive tackle Brian Price after a loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 13 of the 2011 NFL season. Morris left Tampa Bay with a 17-31 record as a head coach.

While Morris is only in as an interim, he has coached in the league before and has enough knowledge to lead a team, despite his results. No doubt the Falcons job will be available at the end of the season, but the Falcons did right by choosing a member of their staff who has been in this situation before, even though his record is lacking.

Atlanta will take on the Minnesota Vikings in Minneapolis next week.
