The Indianapolis Colts have a defense that teams dream about, but they don’t have the quarterback to get them to the top.

The defense for the Indianapolis Colts is Super Bowl-caliber, but unfortunately for the Horseshoes, Philip Rivers is washed up and not the right guy to lead the offense. There was doubt surrounding Rivers after he struggled in his final year with the Chargers last season, but the Colts brought him in with the hopes that he’d be enough to get them a division title and take them deep in the playoffs.

While the Colts are 3-2 and look to be a threat to win the division, it’s not because of Rivers, but rather because of their smothering defense. It’s because of this defense that Indianapolis has notched three wins to this point of the season and they did as much as they could this past week against the Browns, but Rivers’ two interceptions proved costly.

The Colts signed Rivers and decided to go with him over Jacoby Brissett and neither guy is the right guy for this team. They need a better signal-caller to help lead this offense and while there’s probably not much hope at the deadline this year (unless somehow a guy like Sam Darnold becomes available), the Colts need to be zeroing in on acquiring a legitimate quarterback for the 2021 season.

It’s unfortunate for the Colts, as their defense has been tremendous through five games. The high-flying Browns put up 32 points on them, but Indy made it tough, picking off Baker Mayfield twice and hitting him hard in the process. They also had done a pretty nice job containing what had been an explosive run game, which is another sign that Indy’s defense is the real deal.

Rivers was ineffective in this game, throwing for 243 yards and two interceptions and has not been very efficient for the Colts in general. He was always turnover prone in San Diego/Los Angeles and his first interception in this game was a pick-six, which ended up being the difference in this match-up.

The Colts should still win the AFC South, but they likely won’t make a deep run in the playoffs due to not having a legitimate quarterback to lead their offense and that’s too bad because this defense is Super Bowl caliber.
