Atlanta Falcons Candidate No. 3: Josh McDaniels

It seems like every offseason, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ name is thrown out there in head coaching searches throughout the NFL. This offseason will be no different, and Atlanta could look to him to take over as the new voice of the team.

McDaniels is still currently within Pats head coach Bill Belichick’s staff, a role he has held on two separate occasions during his coaching career.

McDaniels broke into the NFL as a coach in 2001 with New England before leaving to become the head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009. After his departure from Denver in 2010, McDaniels was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Los Angeles Rams in 2011 before rejoining the Patriots in 2012.

The offensive-minded offensive coordinator has been in the final interview stages for a few different head coaching positions around the league over the last few years, only to result in him returning to lead the offensive play-calling in New England. In 2020 and leading into 2021, that could change and perhaps McDaniels would view the Falcons job as an intriguing one.

In the past, McDaniels has coached the likes of Tom Brady in New England, which means he is used to an offensive-focused team with a veteran quarterback. It might be time for Atlanta to look for a more offense-centric head coach to lead this organization moving forward.

McDaniels could find some success at the head of the Falcons if he would be interested in the head coaching job and the organization was interested in return.

He’s certainly a name to keep an eye on once again throughout the offseason.
