Dallas Cowboys 7-round 2021 NFL Mock Draft starts needed defensive overhaul
By Randy Gurzi
As mentioned with their first pick, the Cowboys really need a safety, and not taking one in the first round will be a bit of a risk. However, recent seasons have shown that this is a risk they can afford to take. In 2018, they passed on a safety and Juan Thornhill and Taylor Rapp were available for them in Round 2. They took Trysten Hill which made no sense at all. And it looks worse the farther we get from that decision.
This past season, there was another talented safety who should have gone in the first round that slid into the second as Grant Delpit from LSU dropped much later than anticipated. Sadly for the Cleveland Browns, Delpit was injured and will miss the season but he was still a steal for them.
With the past two seasons serving as an example that good safeties can fall, this mock has Caden Sterns from Texas still on the board when Dallas picks in Round 2. If that is the case and they don’t take him, they simply don’t care about stopping the pass.
For far too long they have put patchwork players on the back end of their defense and someone such as Sterns could finally be the answer. He’s a centerfield-type of safety who can play in both zone and man coverage — and the simple fact that he can play coverage would make him the best safety in Big D from Day 1. This defense needs a ton of work and the first two picks in this draft go a long way toward fixing it.
