Green Bay Packers: 5 Trade targets at the 2020 NFL trade deadline
By Joe Kipp
2. Quinnen Williams, DL, New York Jets
There’s been a ton of rumors recently that the Jets could be shopping defensive lineman Quinnen Williams. Drafted third overall in 2019, Williams has the talent to be one of the best interior linemen in the NFL. Obviously, the Packers have a glaring weakness along the interior, sans Kenny Clark.
Let’s get this out of the way first: trading for Williams wouldn’t be cheap. The Jets invested a top-three draft pick in Williams just last season, so prying him away would be extremely difficult. There’s a reason New York felt comfortable selecting Williams with that type of draft capital.
That said, adding Williams would give the Packers an immediate upgrade along the defensive interior. Williams, still just 22 years old, is a premiere run defender and would team up with Clark as arguably the best duo among all interior linemen.
There’s something to be said about trading for a known commodity versus drafting a (largely) unknown prospect. Yes, trading for Williams would be expensive. But we know what Williams is capable of in the NFL.
It’d likely take at least a second-round pick to acquire him, but the security of knowing what he’s capable of is worth it. The only problem is the Packers already have a few key players to re-sign this offseason, so absorbing Williams’ future cap hit would be tricky.
