Dallas Cowboys: 4 Trade targets on New York Jets amid firesale
By Randy Gurzi
2. Quinnen Williams, Defensive Tackle
One of the brightest young stars on the entire New York Jets roster is former No. 3 overall pick Quinnen Williams. The former Alabama standout was added last season by the Jets and he instantly became a fan favorite for his memorable interviews. A soft-spoken and funny kid, Williams can flip the switch when the game starts as he has no problem throwing players around with his 6-foot-3, 303-pound frame.
While at Alabama, Williams was a player who excelled at not only shutting down the run but also at pressuring the quarterback. In the NFL, he’s still working on the pass rush part of his game, evidenced by the fact that he’s graded at a 76.7 against the run while scoring a 67.4 in the pass-rushing department according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required). Now in his second NFL season, Williams has 52 tackles and 4.5 sacks, with his two sacks this season both coming in a Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers.
For Dallas, Williams would be a phenomenal addition. They were hoping this season would be big for their defensive line with players such as Everson Griffen, Gerald McCoy, Aldon Smith, and Dontari Poe joining a unit that already had DeMarcus Lawrence. However, outside of the surprising Smith, none of those players have lived up to expectations and McCoy never took a snap before suffering a season-ending injury.
Adding Williams could be costly — possibly a second-round pick — but it would be worth it. Not only would you get a stud on his rookie deal, but Williams’ size and strength would even take a lot of pressure off the players around him, making their lives easier.
