1. Marcus Maye, Safety

For whatever reason, the Dallas Cowboys hate safeties. They might not come out and say it, but it’s beyond obvious. Year after year, they skip over safeties in the draft and free agency alike. Guys such as Earl Thomas beg to join them and twice we’ve seen Tyrann Mathieu hit the open market without as much as a sniff from Dallas.

In the draft, players like Taylor Rapp, Eddie Jackson, Budda Baker, Juan Thornhill, and many more have been available while Dallas sticks their noses up and takes a player they deem a ‘better fit’ at a different position. The results rarely work out, and all you need to do is look at Taco Charlton who was taken ahead of Baker, and Trysten Hill who was taken instead of Thornhill and Rapp to see how it’s worked out for Dallas.

As bad as it has been at safety for years, 2020 is the worst yet. Dallas released Ha Ha Clinton-Dix before the season kicked off and it’s hard to imagine he was any worse than what’s been going on in the secondary. The Cowboys have been led by Xavier Woods this season and while he hasn’t been terrible, the revolving door of Darian Thompson, Donovan Wilson, and Steven Parker has been.

There’s absolutely no way the Cowboys can realistically be looking at their safeties and believe this is good enough. For that reason, they need to get on the phone today and call the New York Jets and ask about Marcus Maye.

Every good defense in the NFL has to have a talented safety, and the Cowboys lack of a solid presence in this department has been their undoing for years. Maye would fix that as he’s quietly become the 11th highest-rated safety in the NFL according to PFF.

A former second-round pick, Maye is set for free agency in 2021 and it would be a surprise to see him return to the Jets. For that reason, Dallas could get him at a decent value, should New York be willing to move on.
