Green Bay Packers: Is Davante Adams the NFL’s best receiver?
By Joe Kipp
There’s an argument to be made that Packers’ Davante Adams is the best receiver in the NFL.
At this point in his career, Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams is unquestionably a top-five receiver in the NFL. But with the way he’s playing in 2020, Adams might just be the best overall.
Despite missing two games earlier this season with a hamstring strain, Adams has been one of the NFL’s most consistent weapons when he’s been on the field. The Packers offense has been on a historic tear in 2020, thanks in large part to Adams’ efficiency.
For the last few seasons, Julio Jones has worn the crown as the NFL’s best receiver. Some might argue Deandre Hopkins. At Adams’ current pace, though, it’s hard not to consider him for that title.
Adams’s historic performance on Sunday against the Texans reminded everyone what he’s capable of. Let’s just say if you had Adams in fantasy football, you were in for a big day. He recorded a career-high 196 yards and posted his second game in 2020 of at least 13 receptions.
Everything about Adams’ performance screamed superstar. His connection with Aaron Rodgers was telepathic at times, specifically on back-shoulder throws. The timing, rhythm and patience between the two were incredibly impressive. He accounted for nearly 70 percent of Rodgers’ passing yards and was responsible for seven third-down conversions.
Davante Adams leads the NFL in receiving yards per game.
In four games played, Adams has recorded 36 receptions for 449 yards and four touchdowns. On a per-game basis, he’s averaging 112.2 yards (first in NFL). Only one other player (Hopkins) is currently averaging over 100 receiving yards per game.
Every time Adams steps on the field, he’s a threat to score. If he’s not being double-teamed, it’s an automatic mismatch against opposing cornerbacks. Adams’ route running and release off the line of scrimmage are both second to none in the league.
Now that Adams is healthy, he looks the best he’s ever looked. At 27 years old, the three-time Pro Bowler is in the midst of his prime. The passing of the torch from Julio to Adams appears to be happening right before our eyes. Enjoy it while it lasts.
