New England Patriots: 5 Trade targets on offense at 2020 trade deadline
2. Zach Ertz, TE, Philadelphia Eagles
Like what was mentioned a few players ago when analyzing a potential trade for Minnesota Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph, the tight end position has been and continues to be a weak spot in the Patriots offense yet again in 2020.
One player that could step right in and fill in that role in a big way would be Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz, who has been one of the top tight ends in the NFL for the past few years.
Ertz has had an interesting 2020 season so far and it appears as though there might be some frustration brewing for him in his role and time with the Eagles. That might spark the two sides ultimately parting ways and Philadelphia fielding calls on the solid tight end before the trade deadline arrives on Nov. 3.
Ertz would step right into the top spot on the depth chart at tight end in New England and would give the passing game a nice large target in the middle of the field to help a passing attack that needs all the help it can get right now.
The soon-to-be 30-year-old tight end has had somewhat of a down year in 2020, which has pushed Dallas Goedert into more of a starting role with the Eagles and kind of pushing aside Ertz as the top tight end on the team.
Ertz could certainly still produce for a team if he is able to stay healthy, and with the emergence of Goedert in Philadelphia, the Eagles might try and see what teams are willing to give up for Ertz’s services this year and beyond.
Ertz is set to remain under contract for at least the 2021 season, so a trade for the tight end would be more than just a rental for the rest of the 2020 campaign. Although New England might have to give up a higher-level draft pick or picks for Ertz, it might be a move worth making and could immediately boost the Patriots offense for at least the rest of this year.
