Dallas Cowboys: Frustrated Jerry Jones defends Mike McCarthy
Jerry Jones is not blaming Mike McCarthy for the Dallas Cowboys’ early-season woes.
Nothing this season seems to be going right for Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys so far this season. On Tuesday, the owner took to the airwaves and vented his frustration by telling a Dallas sports radio broadcaster to “shut up” while answering questions about his team’s misfortunes this season.
Jones seemed to be emotional during his weekly radio appearance on 105.3 FM, The FAN. Appearing on the Shan & R.J. Show, he voiced his support of head coach Mike McCarthy in spite of the team’s horrid season-start and embarrassing 25-3 loss at the hands of the Washington Football Team last Sunday.
“I’ve got my man,” said Jones while supporting McCarthy. “You wanted someone in case the you-know-what hit the fan that had the credibility and had the do-ability to do what? Stand tall and strong as the head coach. And he’s doing that. In answer to your question, he’s doing that in the face of adversity.”
Tensions seem to be heating up in Dallas for a Cowboys (2-5) team that was expecting to be a contender for a Super Bowl this season. Instead, the Cowboys have limped to a poor start and have been impacted by season-ending injuries to starting quarterback Dak Prescott, as well as offensive linemen La’el Collins and Tyron Smith.
When asked how much blame is self-deserved for the Cowboys’ poor start, speaking as the general manager, Jones said:
"“That’s not the way it works. Never has worked that way. Didn’t work that way from the first day I walked through this door. And I’ve had the last say on everything since I bought the team in 1989. Period.”"
Jones also offered the following
"“I think you basically step up there that it’s a joint effort. Has been forever. And it’s a joint effort…have a lot of input. Have input from some of the best there are in terms of opinions, in terms of deciding what to do. Have lived a life of being able to determine when there’s too much input but don’t confuse the ultimate decision with just a single-minded decision.”"
Is Jerry Jones out of line regarding his thoughts on the 2020 Dallas Cowboys?
Throughout his tenure as owner and general manager since purchasing the team, Jones has been the subject of a wide array of criticism for numerous head coaching hires, personnel and roster decisions, and his strong vocal presence as the frontman for the Cowboys in terms of interviews with radio hosts, television commentators and locker room reporters.
Without elaborating, Jones went on to say that he anticipates some “personnel changes” before later offering an apology to the radio hosts. The owner pointed out that he didn’t want to make excuses and that many involved with the Dallas organization are invested in bringing better days to Cowboys fans.
“If I were a little abrupt there, then I really don’t want to have our day start that way. You’re too good of men for that,” Jones said. “This certainly isn’t my most tactful time, you might say, with this thing, as we discuss these matters. I’m disappointed for our fans. I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. It was not the plan at all.”
While Jones is going to put blame on the head coach in his first year with the Cowboys, he’s clearly unhappy with how things are transpiring in Dallas — and how could he not be after the team’s 2-5 start. If the struggles continue, though, it’ll be intriguing to see how Jones’ tune changes or if it does at all.
