Green Bay Packers: Will Fuller is the perfect trade target at deadline
The Green Bay Packers have inquired about trading for wide receiver Will Fuller.
When it comes to the Green Bay Packers, they have exceeded the expectations of many as they come out of Week 7. They sit at 5-1 on the season and recently bounced back from their first loss of the year as they shellacked the Hoston Texans. Coincidentally, they may be looking to those Texans for some help at the NFL trade deadline.
As the Packers consider their options at the trade deadline to potentially make a Super Bowl push, one player in their crosshairs is Houston wide receiver Will Fuller. According to Aaron Reiss of The Athletic, Green Bay has made calls to the Texans about the availability of the wideout, adding that Houston isn’t having a “firesale” and won’t just give Fuller away.
The No. 21 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Fuller’s talent has never been in question. His availability due to health, however, has been an issue. That has been remedied so far this season and, despite the Texans’ struggles, he’s put up good numbers. Playing in all seven games, he has 31 receptions for 490 yards and five touchdowns.
But given the fact that the Packers would likely have to pay retail price to trade for Will Fuller, the question becomes if they would be wise to make such a deal. The answer isn’t hard to come by.
Will Fuller would be the perfect trade deadline addition for the Green Bay Packers.
Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers offense have been playing out of their minds to start the year, with the exception of the loss to the Bucs. Having said that, they’ve been doing that without a deep wide receiver group. Especially with Allen Lazard out due to injury, it’s been Davante Adams and spare parts — and even Adams has been hurt.
Fuller would remedy that immediately. He can be a No. 1 caliber wideout if called upon but also has the ability as a speedy big-play threat to complement Adams perfectly. Adams is a crafty route-runner who can operate at all levels but that could open up plays down the field for Fuller, which Rodgers would surely love. The fit is obvious.
That said, the big concern with any trade is the potential price. Given that the Packers didn’t draft a wide receiver in the 2020 offseason despite the obvious need, it’s worth asking what price they would be willing to pay for Fuller, especially if the Texans are going to drive a hard bargain. Having said that, there may be room to work.
Now-fired head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien left the Texans in a bad spot as it pertains to their future, specifically with draft capital. So while they may not be wanting to give away valuable assets such as Will Fuller, they could offer a discount to an interested party. For instance, would they part with a second-round pick from Green Bay for Fuller? They’d have to at least consider it.
With the situation at hand, Green Bay’s success and what Fuller would bring to the Packers offense, if there’s a realistic chance of this deal getting done before the NFL trade deadline, Rodgers would have to be angry if the team didn’t make it happen.
