Grading the New York Jets’ 2020 NFL Draft class after seven games.

Through seven games in the 2020 season, the New York Jets are mired in a seemingly endless losing streak. They’ve started the year with an 0-7 record, looking well on their way to a possible, if not probable, 0-16 record. Suffice it to say that things haven’t been going swimmingly thus far for anyone involved with Gang Green.

With that said, it’s early — perhaps way too early — to grade the 2020 NFL Draft class of the Jets. But what the heck — it’s been a nightmarish season to this point, so why not try to find some positives with the young players that could potentially be part of any rebuilding effort on the heels of a winless season.

So taking that into account, let’s take a look at how general manager Joe Douglas’ initial draft class with the New York Jets looks through seven games, handing out a grade to each player.

New York Jets rookie grades for 2020 (through Week 7)

Mekhi Becton, OT (1st round, 11th overall) – Grade: B+

The Louisville product was the largest offensive tackle in the class at 6-7, 364 pounds and has the potential to be one of the best left tackles in team history. Becton has been hampered by a shoulder injury lately but has shown excellent progress in blocking for both the running and passing games.

He is a fine athlete for such a huge man and, if he can avoid the injury bug moving forward, Becton has definite Pro Bowl potential. He reminds me of a young Orlando Pace.

Denzel Mims, WR (2nd round, 59th overall) – Grade: B-

The speedy former Baylor standout finally made his NFL debut last Sunday against the Bills after missing the first six games with a hamstring injury. The 6-3, 207-pounder had a team-high seven targets and finished with four receptions for 42 yards.

Denzel Mims gives quarterback Sam Darnold a much-needed speedy weapon. Mims needs to continue to develop his route tree. I really should give Mims an incomplete grade here but this grade is more on his potential moving forward this season.

Ashtyn Davis, S (3rd round, 68th overall) – Grade: C

The former Golden Bear has started just one game so far this season and has not made much of an impact to date at free safety (six tackles). However, he does have a high ceiling and is averaging 21.5 yards per kick return. That versatility is a bonus.

Jabari Zuniga, DE (3rd round, 79th overall) – Grade: Incomplete

In New York’s eternal quest for an edge rusher with any sort of impact, the 6-3, 264-pounder has not played yet in 2020 due to a quadricep injury. He’s currently on injured reserve.

La’Mical Perine, RB (4th round, 120th overall) – Grade: C-

The Florida product recorded his first NFL touchdown last Sunday against Buffalo, adding 55 total yards from scrimmage. He’s in a backfield split with Frank Gore for the rest of the season. Perine is averaging 3.7 yards per carry on 33 rushes and does not possess breakaway speed.

James Morgan, QB (4th round, 125th overall) – Grade: Incomplete

The former FIU signal-caller is currently third on the quarterback depth chart and has not taken a snap so far. He tossed 14 touchdown passes in his senior year at Florida International.

Cameron Clark, LT (4th round, 129th overall) – Grade: Incomplete

Another draftee, another injury. Clark is currently on IR with shoulder and knee injuries. Of course.

Bryce Hall, CB (5th overall, 158th overall) – Grade: Incomplete

A talented player with upside but he’s been beset by injuries. Another draft pick on IR. Hall is currently rehabbing from an ankle injury.

Braden Mann, P (6th round, 191st overall) – Grade: A

A highly-touted special teamer from Texas A&M, Mann has been terrific this season — he certainly has had a lot of practice. He’s averaging a solid 45.3 yards per boot, including a long of 59 yards. He’s also handled four kickoffs. A great late-round value pick.
