Bears wide receiver Javon Wims unthinkably punches Saints defender
Chicago Bears wide receiver Javon Wims put himself in a thoughtless situation.
Coming into this season, Chicago Bears wide receiver Javon Wims was hoping to make an impact on the team’s offense. And during the teams 5-2 start, he seemingly was starting to catch on. But now after what happened in the Week 8 meeting with the Saints, he could be facing severe consequences.
Late in the third quarter as New Orleans and Chicago were tied, 13-13, Wims made an emotionally inappropriate decision.
Wims took a number of swings at Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson and punched him in the helmet while additionally attempting to snatching his chain. While fighting on the field is head-scratching enough, what made the situation so flabbergasting is that it appeared to be unprovoked. Wims was ejected from the game as a result of his actions.
Javon Wims could be suspended for a period of time after this incident.
NFL fans will recall how defensive back Aqib Talib snatched a chain from receiver Michael Crabtree and, just last season, when Browns defensive end Myles Garrett swung a helmet at Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.
This may not be on the same level by any stretch but Wims’ actions clearly warrant some consequences. Fighting happens from time to time in the NFL but an apparent cheap shot that incited a mini-melee is something that the league can’t lead slide by.
Given how lackluster the Bears offense has been in recent weeks, any form of losing a player is further detrimental to the team’s growth. Furthermore, it only puts a damper on Wims’ development and could possibly jeopardize his future in the National Football League.
Javon Wims was supposed to be a player that could help the Bears offense flourish. Now, he has been placed on a list of players who have made dumb decisions on the football field, a list that no player wants to be part of.
