NFL trade deadline blockbuster No. 5: Dwayne Haskins to the Steelers

When Ron Rivera took over as head coach of the Washington Football Team, there were discussions about what that would mean for second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins. The team used a first-round pick on him in 2019 but that was under a different regime. Subsequently, there was a possibility that Rivera would want to hand-pick his own signal-caller to rebuild the franchise with.

I was admittedly skeptical that this would be the case, especially when Haskins got the starting nod in Week 1. Yet, the concerns about Haskins were well-founded. He was shockingly benched in favor of Kyle Allen after his first few starts this season and reports have continued to leak out about him being a potential issue in the locker room due to immaturity.

Haskins hasn’t been a star to this point in his career but his talent is obvious. If Washington is truly looking elsewhere at quarterback, then dealing Haskins is in their best interest. And making a trade for the quarterback would also be in the best interest of the Pittsburgh Steelers given the state of their QB room.

Ben Roethlisberger has returned this season and the Steelers are the lone undefeated team in the league. Even still, the future is murky. There is no contingency plan in place for when Big Ben goes. Therefore, if Pittsburgh could make a reasonable deal for Haskins, they are the perfect place to deal with any immaturity and also afford the quarterback time to learn and grow into their quarterback of the future.
