NFL trade deadline blockbuster No. 4: Stephon Gilmore to the Titans

Another team that has been far worse than expected this season is the New England Patriots. After they opened up the year at 2-1 with Cam Newton taking control in Foxborough, the team has gone off the rails. They’ve lost their last four games and now sit well outside the AFC East picture and playoff picture at large.

This isn’t familiar territory for Bill Belichick and the Patriots by any means. Yet, we still don’t know if the organization is going to look at this and try to be buyers or sellers at the 2020 NFL trade deadline as a result of their recent skid. They should be sellers, though. As such, they should look to start rebuilding and start with unloading reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore — even if reports indicate the team doesn’t plan on moving him.

After one of the most dominant cornerback seasons in recent memory, Gilmore has undeniably taken a step back in the 2020 season. Part of that is due to the Patriots at large having less help around him. But given his high-end market salary, he might not be an asset that fits into the plans of New England any longer.

If that is the case, Mike Vrabel and the Tennessee Titans should be knocking at the door. Not only does the Titans defense largely mirror what the Patriots have done to lead to Gilmore’s success but they are sitting at 5-2 looking to make a strong second-half push. With cornerback depth looking like an issue, a player of Gilmore’s caliber could short up a lot of issues in Nashville.
