Back on the clock in Round 3, the Dallas Cowboys finally address their glaring need at safety as they take TCU’s Trevon Moehrig. Year after year, they ignore this spot, and while it would be ideal to get a player before this round, things didn’t work out that way — and their glaring needs at other spots also contributed to them waiting.

The good news is, the rest of the NFL has often devalued the position as well which is why a player who should have been picked in the second is still here. Moehrig is a centerfield safety who can help Dallas prevent the big plays they’ve become accustomed to surrendering.

His sophomore season was his best as he put up 62 tackles and four picks that season. He hasn’t been as explosive as a junior but he does average one pass break up per game this year. He’s instinctive and smart, which is exactly what the Cowboys need.

(Estimated comp pick on The Draft Network) – The Draft Network has Dallas with a third-round comp pick and that’s probably a safe bet with the loss of Byron Jones. While they clearly don’t get a player of similar value, they make good on this pick with the selection of ASU’s Merlin Robertson. A versatile linebacker, Robertson can be used in a traditional linebacker role but also has experience off the edge rushing the passer.

This season, the linebacker play in Big D has been nothing short of abysmal. While they might not be ready for a complete rebuild, it would be smart to at least begin to bring in some competition, which is what they get with the talented Robertson.
