Can the New York Jets’ 2020 season get any worse?
Can the New York Jets surprise the very-vulnerable New England Patriots?
It’s already been a long year for the Green and White. And things could get even more miserable Monday evening if the New York Jets are unable to get their first victory of the season against a rival that has had their number the past nine seasons.
Flashback to 2010 and the last time the Jets reached the NFL Playoffs. The club finished 11-5, second in the AFC East and would eventually reach the AFC Championship Game for a second straight year. That was due to the fact that the team led by head coach Rex Ryan orchestrated a stunning 28-21 upset of the Patriots in the same Gillette Stadium that they were humiliated on a Monday night, 45-3, during the regular season.
A week later, the Jets fell to the Steelers in the conference title game. That would prove to be the last postseason game played by the franchise. But when it comes to their recent history vs. the Pats, it’s been pretty painful regardless of the head coach, quarterback or the remaining personnel.
New York has dropped eight straight in this AFC East rivalry and owns a dismal 2-16 record vs. the Patriots dating back to 2011. It’s worth noting that both of the Jets’ victories over that span have come at MetLife Stadium in 2013 and 2015 and the club needed overtime in each instance to get the job done.
Of course, this is a very different year in Foxborough as Bill Belichick’s team owns a 2-5 record and is riding a four-game losing streak. The club is 0-3 on the road this season and quarterback Cam Newton is struggling. And the Patriots’ defense came into Week 9 ranked 27th in the NFL against the run.
Via ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the Patriots will also be without veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore for the second straight game. So could this unit have its issues against quarterback Joe Flacco (the expected starter), ageless running back Frank Gore and the Jets’ offense in general on Monday night in New Jersey?
Adam Gase’s New York Jets are 0-8 and have more losses and more turnovers (9) than offensive touchdowns (7). The team is averaging a mere 11.8 points per game. The team is hosting a very vulnerable Patriots’ squad. It could add up to good news. But who knows where this club is headed with another loss to what is a very undermanned New England squad?
