There were some bittersweet moments for the Washington Football Team on Sunday as Alex Smith had his first touchdown pass since 2018. That pass was a 68-yarder as he hit Terry McLaurin who broke a tackle and took off for the score. McLaurin made it a close game as the Football Team fought back from a 20-3 deficit to make it a 23-20 game with 10:24 to play.

The bitter part of that was why Smith was in the game. Smith, who is a great story after overcoming a horrific leg injury, replaced Kyle Allen who suffered a dislocated ankle which had a small fracture according to Tom Pelissero, who notes that this was actually good news since the injury looked much worse on the field.

Also bitter was how this game ended. Smith was trying to orchestrate the comeback and ended up throwing two picks late in the game. The first was on a pass meant for J.D. McKissic that ended up in the hands of New York safety Jabrill Peppers. He then was picked off by Logan Ryan on their final drive, while trying to hit McLaurin.

Washington is now 2-6 and has lost twice to the Giants on the season. They still have a shot mathematically in the awful NFC East but we all know that they’re not going anywhere.
